  • Biography

    After completing her B.A. in Art History at the University of North Carolina, Suzanne Tanner Chitwood studied at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and went on to earn her M.F.A. in painting and drawing from Tulane University. She then spent time working in the film and music video industry in Los Angeles and at Christies Auction house in Los Angeles and New York. She completed the course work for her teaching certificate at the University of West Florida in Pensacola in 1989 and taught art for thirteen years in public and private schools to all grade levels, kindergarten through university. She also served as the Art Coordinator for Albemarle County and taught at Charlottesville’s Governor’s School for students Gifted in the Visual Arts.

    In addition to the artist’s vigorous studio practice and her large scale charcoal drawings, often of dogs and cows, Suzanne has written one and illustrated two childrens’ books using her unique torn paper collages. Her book Wake Up,Big Barn!  won great praise in many reviews, including one in the Sunday New York Times Book ReviewWake Up, Big Barn! was also included in the 2002 Original Art Show in New York City.  The entire collection of the original artwork from this book was purchased by the Battle building at the University of Virginia Children’s Hospital.  Suzanne’s work is found in many other public and private collections.
