  • Statement

My paintings are about generation, about visualizing vibrancy using organic forms found in nature.

Collaboration between intuition and discipline, I first begin with observation creating drawings and then compose paintings in the studio.  I seek a dynamic essence with expansive paint – layering, building texture, and pushing color – to create an effect that is both generous and unexpected. Inviting one within the painting to meditate intimately, imagery dissolves into expressionism, becoming more about paint, gesture and energy.

In my view, art is a relational experience, happening simultaneously on different planes, be it between art and artist, art and viewer, or artist and viewer. My paintings invite engagement and contemplation, touching others in ways that I will never fully know. Ultimately, my desire is to embrace art’s potential to connect, affirm, and spark joy.

  • Biography

For Ellen Hathaway, making art is more about process than product. Her first memory of creating a picture is as a child scratching into wooden windowsills in her childhood home. After receiving degrees from The University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and The University of Virginia’s Curry School of Education, pursuing careers in media advertising followed by teaching, Ellen left the workforce to concentrate her energies on homemaking and family; it was during this season that her desire to draw and paint reemerged and clarified. She has directed her art education through committed experimentation and study with notable instructors Steven Aimone, and Ron Boehmer. Ellen believes, “While life offers pain, loss and confusion, it is really the gift of our amazing human capacity for love, connection and restoration that challenges us – learning to experience life as infinite not finite is what being an art-maker is about…. a verb more than a noun.”

After calling Charlottesville home for 30 years, Ellen now lives and paints in Raleigh, NC.  She is married to Curtis Hathaway, and they have two daughters Brooke and Anne Clark.
